09sep24 - dusty switchboard from the time - rone exhibit

One week into the new job and things are looking dicey. Personally at least. The job itself is quite engaging now that I’ve worked through a lot of bureaucracy soup. Being over 20x the scale of my old team of 6 and having so many contractors on hire, there are a lot of procedures to stick to. I imagine it means I am also being tracked on many metrics. That and a lot of personal responsibility to resolve issues, means I am feeling quite stressed.

As for co-workers, I feel very much the outcast. My icebreaker, of someone who likes games and EDM, didn’t make a dent. It really concretes how I will probably be for the rest of my life — someone who sticks to themselves, tries not to waste people’s time, and gets stuff done. That’s the ideal at least. That may change over time as people get to know me, but it will be a very slow boil. Candle lighter under a cauldron slow. That said, met a few nice people and had a bit of a chat. Can very much feel the arms length I am held at though. Perhaps IT workers shouldn’t be used as a metric when it comes to being social.

Been able to flesh out my “feeling notebook” a lot more recently. I’m very happy for the switch-up, as it was starting to be blank for weeks in a row. Feeling a gap with others is inspiring me to go out a bit more and improve myself. Even though work’s been a rocky start socially; I’m getting to see and try new stuff, which is always fun.

In other news, been playing a lot of Valve’s worst kept secret, Deadlock. Its a ton of fun to someone with many hours in Dota 2 and Overwatch. Takes my favourite part of both to make something simple enough, with enough depth to get sucked into.

Some quickfire reviews My Review Scale

⭐ Something I enjoyed, was good/important to do, stirred some feeling - e.g. my Morning Routine

⭐⭐ Really enjoyed doing it, had a strong impact on me, felt it in my chest - e.g. Montmorency falls visit

⭐⭐⭐All-time favourite, life-altering impact, stricken by the feels - e.g. Quitting my 7-year job

Nine Sols ⭐⭐ A charming and beautifully hand-drawn metroidvania. Combat heavily focused on parrying and an inspired techno-daoist setting make it feel fresh to go through, while still having all the staples of the genre. The world is fleshed out and engaging, the characters are quite well realized, and the combat is tight once over the learning curve. A solid recommend that won’t lend itself to replays, but feels rich enough to be enjoyed once

Time . Rone ⭐ An art exhibit that captures how different rooms and living spaces looked 70 years ago. Would be much more engaging if I knew the period better, but the realistic dust, cobwebs and prop work is great to admire on its own. An exhibit that’s been in place for a month looks 15 years old, which is commendable
